VENI ETIAM “come back again “ Concept: 40 rare big albumen glass plates 8 ½X10 ½ inches, signed Dott. Nap. Candiani with applied Venice’s seal, 1880-1890. « Objets trouvés » while artist in residency at the Swiss Institute of Roma in Venice, autumn 2008. Black and white glass negatives of chandeliers, mirrors, furniture, completed by Venetian artisan and photographer around 1880, catalogue, archive? Reinterpretation thanks to contemporary digital technologies. Adjunction/deduction of colour’s tonality – inducing frescoes & paintings of the Venetian’s school as well as the actual atmosphere of the eternal City.

Objets trouvés, at a flee market, the 19th century black/white slides by Zurich photographer Johannes Ganz (1821-86) depict the original Grand Tour. An educational rite of passage in the 18th and 19th centuries reserved for upper class European and American young men of means, this former trip of privilege is now possible for many people in the 21st century….A body of work that transforms the traditional trip of Europe by juxtaposing 19th century slides with contemporary digital images of F&D Cartier’s own journey.Inkjet archival prints size: 42 x 59,4 cm / Ed. 5 + 2 size: 59,4 x 84,1cm / 23,4 x 33.1 inchesI / Ed. 3 +2 > for buying inquiries
Discovered by the Cartier’s in a market in Switzerland, the 19th century slides by photographer Johannes Ganz depict the original Grand Tour. An educational rite of passage in the 18th and 19th centuries reserved for upper class European and American young men of means, this former trip of privilege is now possible for many people in the 21st century….
The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe (mainly Italy) undertaken by primarily upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. The tradition was extended to include more of the middle class after rail and steamship travel made the journey less of a burden, and Thomas Cook made the "Cook's Tour" a byword “ TOURISM”.

A partir d’une série trouvée de diapositives n/bl sur verre 8,5x10cm « Grand Tour d’Italie » de Johannes Ganz de Zurich, datant de 1870, nous avons superposé, par associations d’idées, nos photographies digitales en couleurs des archives de nos voyages de part le Monde.

Le Grand Tour, écrit de la même façon en anglais, est à l’origine un long voyage effectué par les jeunes gens des plus hautes classes de la société européenne, en particulier britannique ou allemande, à partir du XVIIe siècle et surtout au XVIIIe siècle…
Produced with conceptual vision and antique subjects, Grand Tour Revisited embodies the twenty year tradition of F&D Cartier to elevate found objects. Revealing dreamlike connotations poetically shifting between current existence and historical appearance as in Napoli, Kaunas two frames are seamlessly united into one. As a result, Christ merges with a palm tree while a golden staff rising from an abandoned Lithuanian church photographed in the 21st century pierces up into 19th century Naples. A muted grey audio speaker subtly reminds us of the present, creating a bridge between timeframes and breaking the historical structure of the Grand Tour through unexpected visual pairings and compositions.

Les destinations principales sont avant tout l’Italie, mais aussi la France, les Pays-Bas, l’Allemagne et la Suisse que le jeune homme parcourt en partant et en revenant dans son pays. Ces voyages duraient parfois plus d’un an, presque toujours en compagnie d’un tuteur. Ils devinrent une pratique normale, voire nécessaire à toute bonne éducation pour des jeunes gens destinés à
de hautes carrières ou simplement issus de l’aristocratie cultivée.

Aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, le Grand Tour était l’apanage des amateurs d’art, des collectionneurs et des écrivains, dont Goethe et Alexandre Dumas. Le Grand Tour eut entre autres pour effet de mettre en contact la haute société de l’Europe du Nord avec l’art antique et aida à la diffusion du palladianisme et du néoclassicisme.
