VENI ETIAM “come back again “ Concept: 40 rare big albumen glass plates 8 ½X10 ½ inches, signed Dott. Nap. Candiani with applied Venice’s seal, 1880-1890. « Objets trouvés » while artist in residency at the Swiss Institute of Roma in Venice, autumn 2008. Black and white glass negatives of chandeliers, mirrors, furniture, completed by Venetian artisan and photographer around 1880, catalogue, archive? Reinterpretation thanks to contemporary digital technologies. Adjunction/deduction of colour’s tonality – inducing frescoes & paintings of the Venetian’s school as well as the actual atmosphere of the eternal City.

Objets trouvés, at a flee market, the 19th century black/white slides by Zurich photographer Johannes Ganz (1821-86) depict the original Grand Tour. The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe (mainly Italy) undertaken by primarily upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. The tradition was extended to include more of the middle class after rail and steamship travel made the journey less of a burden, and Thomas Cook made the "Cook's Tour" a byword “ TOURISM”.

Produced with conceptual vision and antique subjects, Grand Tour Revisited embodies the twenty year tradition of F&D Cartier to elevate found objects. Revealing dreamlike connotations poetically shifting between current existence and historical appearance as in Napoli, Kaunas two frames are seamlessly united into one. As a result, Christ merges with a palm tree while a golden staff rising from an abandoned Lithuanian church photographed in the 21st century pierces up into 19th century Naples. A muted grey audio speaker subtly reminds us of the present, creating a bridge between timeframes and breaking the historical structure of the Grand Tour through unexpected visual pairings and compositions.

Le Grand Tour eut entre autres pour effet de mettre en contact la haute société de l’Europe du Nord avec l’art antique et aida à la diffusion du palladianisme et du néoclassicisme.
